Here’s a walkthrough of some of the considerations, with the usual caveat that you should discuss these issues with your tax preparer before taking action.
If you want to claim a car donation to reduce your federal income taxes, you must itemize your deductions. You can itemize even if the donated car is your only deduction, but that’s usually not the best option.
Here’s the math: Let’s say you’re in the 28% tax bracket and your allowable deduction for the vehicle donation is $1,000. This will save you $280 in taxes. If you’re in the 15% tax bracket and get the same $1,000 deduction, it will reduce your taxes by $150.
If the car donation is your only deduction, taking a standard deduction will likely save you thousands of dollars more in taxes. The only way donating a car will give you any tax benefit is if you have a lot of deductions and your total, including the car, exceeds the standard deduction.
Reasons To Donate An Old Car
Only donations to qualified charities can give you a tax deduction. A qualified charity is one that is recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) organization or a religious organization.
To help you determine if a charity qualifies, the easiest way is to use the IRS Exempt Organization Finder or call the IRS toll-free number: 877-829-5500.
The IRS defines fair market value as “the price that a willing buyer and a willing seller would accept for the vehicle, when neither party is obligated to buy or sell and both parties have reasonable knowledge of the relevant facts.”
But under current IRS rules, you can only deduct the fair market value of a vehicle under very specific conditions:

Edmunds can help you determine your vehicle’s fair market value with its Appraise Your Car calculator. Enter your car’s year, make and model, as well as information such as trim level, mileage and condition, and get an accurate idea of your vehicle’s value.
IRS Publication 4303 cautions: “If you use a vehicle price guide to determine fair market value, make sure that the stated sales price is for a vehicle of the same make, model, and year, sold in the same terms and conditions. or options or accessories substantially similar to those on your vehicle.”
It is unrealistic to expect your car to meet one of the strict fair market value requirements. Only around 5% of donated vehicles are suitable for use by the charity’s beneficiaries. About a third of them are simply trash, and the rest are auctioned off with the proceeds going to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Therefore, unless your car is in good or excellent condition, it will most likely be sold at an auction or auto salvage yard. In this case, your deduction is based on the sale price of the car, not the estimated fair market value.
In addition to donating your car directly to a charity, there’s another way your vehicle can help a charity and also maximize your tax benefits: you can sell the car yourself and donate the proceeds. By doing this, you may be able to generate more cash than if you let the charity sell them.
How you proceed depends on your goal. If you’re focused on getting rid of a piece of junk with minimal effort and would see the tax deduction as a nice bonus, then donating your car makes sense. But if your goal is to maximize your tax deduction, review these steps carefully, consult with your tax advisor, and make up your own mind.
